51 baby squid were born in the back of a car less than 2 weeks ago. Now, only 6 remain. This rapid decline in numbers may reflect some missing environmental stimulus not present in these laboratory conditions. More likely, we are witnessing evolution up close: squid produce so many offspring as most do not have the stamina to survive.
Regardless, fishing duties continue as per normal, taking advantage of the good weather before the Christmas storms approach. Providing sufficient numbers of mysid as a food source gives those remaining squid the best chance of survival.
